Long Summary

This article brings together what is currently known about models of care for older people by reviewing relevant literature, outlining the types of models described, and analysing their reported outcomes and impacts. This study found that models of care for older people vary widely and often lack clear guidance. While many involve teams of health professionals, carers, like family members and loved ones, are rarely included. Research is also limited when it comes to rural communities and completely absent for Indigenous populations.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • This article reviews existing research on models of care for older people and finds they vary widely, often lack clear guidance, and rarely include carers. It also highlights major gaps in research on rural and Indigenous communities

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • There’s a lot of variation in how older people are cared for, and many models aren’t clearly defined. Carers are often left out, and there’s little research on what works in rural areas or for Indigenous communities. Highlighting the importance of developing care approaches that are more inclusive and better aligned across different settings.
