Summary

This paper explores the use of a family systems approach when individuals are dealing with anticipatory grief in response to an expected loss. Anticipatory grief exists when there is an expectation of a significant impending loss or death, and it not only affects the care recipient diagnosed with a terminal illness, but also the family and systems they are a part of. As the family transitions from anticipatory grief through bereavement, this will consequently affect relationships within the family system. As such, there may be more advantages of a family systems framework as opposed to treating each family member individually.
