Long Summary

Residential respite is an essential element of aged care as it allows older Australians to stay in their own homes longer, relieving pressure from their carers and ensuring that transitions to residential care only occur when absolutely necessary. However, in recent years, reports from carers having difficulty in finding residential respite care have increased. This study investigates the availability of residential respite around Australia, difficulties in accessing residential respite, and suggests possible improvements to ease these shortages.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Suggests that dedicated respite beds could alleviate this shortage, along with an improved central system for booking
  • Indicates that many people struggle with the issue of organising respite and face similar difficulties

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Highlights that the demand for residential respite is not being met
  • Users felt that both emergency and planned respite were difficult to access
  • Only 35 per cent of respondents were able to offer respite care most of the time, with a further 46 per cent able to offer respite care some of the time
  • Additional respite beds are needed for low care needs, high care needs, and dementia
