Long Summary

Noting the gradual shift from institutionalised forms of health and aged care into the home and community, this paper examines the effect on family and friend carers who are required to balance employment with emerging care responsibilities. Using the longitudinal Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey, Bittman et al. demonstrates the financial disadvantage many working carers experience. This paper highlights the need for policy makers to prepare for an ageing population and address concerns relating to the sustainability of informal care.
