Long Summary

This study aimed to investigate the effects of practices that can help employees combine work with unpaid care for family members who are frail due to old age or who have a disability. The researchers found that caregiver flexibility and flexible leave practices encourage carers to disclose their non-work care role to managers and co-workers, which in turn improves employee psychological outcomes.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Workplaces with flexible leave and working hours encourage carers to disclose their caring role to managers and co-workers
  • Telling your manager and colleagues about your caring role may improve your psychological wellbeing at work

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Recognises the growing number of employers that offer practices to assist their employees in carrying out their unpaid care whilst maintaining their employment
  • Acknowledges that limited research has been conducted regarding the implications of these practices
  • Advocates for a greater number of flexible practices that allow carers to maintain their employment
