Long Summary

Although fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is experienced by both cancer survivors and caregivers, less is known about caregiver FCR. This study compared survivor and caregiver FCR levels, as well as the relationship between caregiver FCR and depression/anxiety. Findings suggest FCR is often as much of a problem for caregivers as it is for survivors.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Research suggests there is a reciprocal relationship in fear of cancer recurrence (FCR)
  • where carers report higher levels of FCR, so did the cancer survivor. This means that understanding and treating FCR amongst carers will likely have broader benefits for survivors as well.
  • There are nuances specific to the caregiver experience, which means they experience FCR differently to cancer survivors. The protective role that carers often adopt, behaviours such as hypervigilance, and fear of their family member dying are central to caregiver experiences of FCR.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Carers identify management of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) as one of their most prevalent unmet needs.
  • Caregivers with higher levels of FCR were more likely to be depressed and anxious, which are strongly associated with negative life outcomes such as poor quality of life and increased caregiver burden.
