Long Summary

This article aims to explore carers’ experiences of mental health nurses and other mental health clinicians in regard to how they respond to them as carers of young people with first-episode psychosis. The study found two dominant themes, firstly, that many carers found mental health practitoners supportive and approachable; secondly, that some carers felt that practitioners undervalued their contribution. The conclusion was that carers have both positive and negative interactions with clinical staff and this can have an impact on their approach to care and future interactions.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Issues with clinical staff can occur on a case-by-case basis
  • Caregivers play an important role, regardless of the treatment they may or may not receive in a clinical setting

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Carers’ interactions with clinical staff can determine their approach to care and staff in future situations
  • Carer experiences are directly affected by how they are treated by clinical staff
  • Feeling undervalued may affect a carer’s commitment to caring
