Long Summary

As Australia’s population ages, the need for informal care to assist older adults to remain living at home increases and now plays a crucial role in healthy ageing. However, the process of caring is becoming increasingly complex and systematic and many carers experience a significant burden associated with coordinating support services and navigating systems in addition to providing care. This study found that entering and mastering the care system are significant tasks within themselves and a barrier to the provision of care.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • You are not alone in facing difficulties with navigating service systems, indeed, the system structure is highly likely to create inequities due to its complexity
  • The work that carers do saves the Australian government billions of dollars in paid care each year

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Current service systems create a high adminstrative burden for carers
  • The complexity of service systems is a significant demand on carers in addition to their caring responsibilities
  • The current caring system is disposed to creating disparities as carers’ specific abilities are integral to full access of services
