Long Summary

This study explores family carers' fall concern of older people who are hospitalised. Family carers are important in preventing community-dwelling older people from falling, yet their concerns about older people’s risk of falling could affect their own physical and psychological health, lifestyle, and burden of care. As such, this research will provide deeper understanding about the factors affecting fall concern among family carers of older people during hospitalisation and after discharge.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Family carers are helping older people live at home longer by supporting their daily activities.
  • Active participation of family carers is crucial in preventing older people from falling, as they know the care recipients well and the best ways to support them.
  • Some carers who have a high degree of concern may become over-protective, further lessening their care recipient's independence.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Concerns of falling is linked to activity restriction, functional impairment, and an increased risk of falling.
  • Carer concerns of older people falling can cause negative psychological effects such as stress, depression, and anxiety, as well as less social engagements and changes to daily routines.
