Long Summary

This publication highlights the growing need for care within an ageing population for those who live with Dementia. The aged care system is overloaded and at-home care is a solution to relieve the pressure from this system, however, there needs to be more support for those who are taking on caring roles. This review considers what works to support those caring for people with Dementia and explores the effectiveness of different intervention techniques to prolong a carer's capacity to maintain care.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • The risk that the person a carer cares for will enter residential care can be influenced by the caregivers feelings of stress and burden as well as their ability to cope
  • The carers wellbeing is just as important as who they are caring for

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Reducing the risk and delaying the progression of dementia may be a more fruitful avenue to prevent or delay entry into residential care than interventions to support carers
  • There are gaps in the research and support systems for carers (in particular, studies for respite services)
  • Supporting carers of people with dementia may have important benefits beyond keeping the person with dementia at home
