Long Summary

The transition of an older family member to a residential aged care facility (RACF) poses challenges for both the individual and their family carer. This article, covering studies published between 2004 and 2019, sought to identify factors influencing adverse mental health outcomes among family carers following this decision. The findings emphasise the significance of addressing factors such as information flow and staff involvement to support family carers and enhance mental health and quality of life during the transition to an RACF.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • The transition of an older family member to a residential aged care facility (RACF) poses challenges for both the individual and their family carer.
  • Carers' pre-existing physical and mental health conditions can increase these challenges.
  • Transparent communication between carers and facility staff, along with staff involvement in emotional support, care monitoring, and advocating for the resident's quality of life can lead to better outcomes for carers.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Pre-existing depressive symptoms and poor subjective health among carers were correlated with negative mental health outcomes following the admission of an older family member to a residential aged care facility.
  • Information flow from the facility, support for role changes, and carer health and demographics were linked to changes in mental health during the transition.
  • The findings emphasise the significance of addressing factors such as information flow and staff involvement to support family carers and enhance mental health and quality of life during the transition to an RACF.
