Long Summary

This paper highlights the creation of iSupport for Young Carers, an online training program designed to help young people caring for family members with dementia. Recognising the unique challenges these carers face, the program aims to improve their mental health, knowledge, and caregiving skills. Developed through a co-design process involving young carers and experts, iSupport is the first e-health tool specifically tailored to this group. It’s an affordable, accessible solution that can help improve the quality of care young carers provide and make it easier for services to identify and support them.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • This study highlights that both young carers and professional participants agree young carers should not be expected to take on heavy caregiving responsibilities.
  • It also provides evidence showing how online tools can effectively address gaps in support for this group of carers.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Young dementia carers are an important group who often don't get the support they need.
  • The iSupport for Young Carers program shows how helpful online tools can be in meeting their needs.
  • Using these tools can improve young carers' wellbeing, help them provide better care, and strengthen the overall caregiving system.
