Supporting people with young-onset dementia and their family carers better

Summary

Utilising an extended case study, this article identifies some of the patterns in support service experiences for those with young-onset dementia and their carers. The article expands on the limitations present in a system focused on carer respite rather than on rehabilitation for the care recipient. It is argued that this is due in part to residential and care facilities having limited understanding of how best to provide support for people with dementia, including young-onset dementia. Instead, a person-centred approach is proposed.
