Long Summary

This article explores the experiences of older people living in Australian residential aged care facilities (RACFs) and their families regarding the Resident of the Day (ROD) process. Through semi-structured interviews with residents and families across four RACFs in Victoria, the study found that residents had only superficial awareness of the ROD process and could not connect it to care planning. Family members were slightly more aware but also could not describe the process or its purpose. The study highlights that despite the ROD process being implemented in all Victorian RACFs, both residents and families lack knowledge about its purpose and the use of the information collected.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • This article features that residents have only a superficial understanding of the ROD process and cannot link it to their care planning, indicating a need for better communication and education.
  • Family members have a slightly better understanding, they still find it difficult to explain the ROD process or its purpose, emphasising the necessity for more inclusive and informative engagement strategies

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Despite the ROD process being implemented across all Victorian RACFs, the lack of knowledge about its purpose and use among residents and families suggests a disconnect between policy implementation and practical understanding
  • To bridge this gap, it is crucial to develop and implement comprehensive educational programs for both residents and their families, ensuring they understand the ROD process and its benefits for care planning
