Long Summary

This resource highlights the many differences between paid and unpaid care. Whilst paid carers are entitled to breaks and maximum work hours under Australian legislation, unpaid carers can be on call up to 24 hours a day, with one third of these carers providing an estimated 40 hours of care per week. Whilst some carers may qualify for income support, carers are by definition unpaid for their care responsibilities. Whilst paid carers are legally entitled to leave, only some carers will qualify for residential respite. Unpaid carers, unlike paid carers are also often not entitled to insurance and may have lower/no superannuation contributions.
