Long Summary

This paper explores existing research on young carers in school and their career perceptions. Young carers are more likely than their peers not to be in education, employment, or training, and are more likely to do poorly at school or college than their non-caregiving peers due to the demands of caring. Young carers are also more at risk as their caring role can limit the range of employment opportunities open to them.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Young carers may often experience a mismatch between their desire for education and career choice, with the realities and challenges of being in a simultaneous caring role.
  • School counsellors and parents are key influencers for young carers deciding on career choices. However, this impact varies depending on the carer's socioeconomic background, with those from lower income groups being less likely to have discussed career choices with parents and counsellors, as opposed to those from higher income groups. This highlights how young carers from lower income groups have the greatest need to access guidance counsellors.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • One significant finding was the emphasis on schools as gatekeepers and identifiers of young carers
  • this includes the schools' input into identifying and supporting young carers. However, staff, funding, and time limitations within schools are still challenges.
  • There are numerous challenges that affect young carers in school, including; falling asleep in class, truanting, lack of concentration, falling behind school work, poor attendance and achievement.
