Long Summary

Primary carers play an important role in supporting the Australian Government's policy of 'ageing in place' or encouraging people to receive care in their own homes or communities rather than in institutions. Supporting carers in their role is therefore an important aspect of the policy's success. Despite numerous programs in place, this study finds that among carers of older Australians, a relatively high proportion (39%) cite unmet needs in their carer role, including a need for financial support, physical assistance, emotional support, improvement in carer health and more respite care. Concerningly, unmet support needs were shown to be strongly associated with markers of poor carer well-being.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Adequate support for carers is particularly important now that older Australians are more likely to remain in their own homes as they age.
  • Despite the different programs that exist to support carers, many carers of older Australians still say that their needs are not met.
  • When carers' support needs are not met, this negatively impacts their wellbeing, finances and relationships.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Supporting carers is an important aspect of the Australian Government's 'ageing in place' policy, however, many carers of older Australians report unmet needs.
  • Unmet carer support needs are associated with a number of adverse outcomes, including reduced physical, emotional and financial wellbeing, and relational strain.
