Long Summary

In recent years, research has highlighted the need for tools to assess self-care practices among informal caregivers, especially those caring for cancer patients. This study aimed to develop and validate a theory-based instrument, the Self-Care of Informal Caregivers Inventory, to measure self-care behaviors in three dimensions: maintenance, monitoring, and management. Conducted in Tehran, Iran, with 234 caregivers, the tool underwent a rigorous development process, including psychometric testing. Results showed strong reliability and validity, confirming its effectiveness. This tool provides a valuable resource for improving caregiver support and understanding their self-care needs.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Self-care is essential to carers wellbeing and can be broken down into three key areas: self-care maintenance, monitoring, and management.
  • By understanding their own self-care practices, carers can focus on maintaining their health, better monitor their own wellbeing, and manage stress or challenges more effectively.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • This study provides policy makers and practitioners with a validated tool to assess the self-care practices of informal caregivers, specifically those supporting cancer patients.
