Long Summary

This report looked into the factors, dynamics, and effects of isolation experienced by older people in NSW. It also highlights existing challenges in connecting with isolated older people who require more targeted services and support.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Older people caring for a partner, or those with limited finances may find it more difficult to pursue social activities to alleviate isolation, despite being motivated to do so.
  • Older adults found that daily habits and routines provide them with a sense of safety in the face of major traumatic life events or social isolation.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Some older people may not identify as being socially isolated when considering ageist social attitudes and stigma around being socially isolated. This can make it particularly challenging for professionals and service providers to identify these individuals.
  • Carers are extremely likely to be socially isolated, as their care relationships and responsibilities may not give them much time for other activities.
