Long Summary

This article examines the relationship between family visits and depression in older adults living in aged care facilities. It finds that while family visits can reduce loneliness and depression, other factors such as cultural values, co-morbidities, functional impairments, and social activities also play significant roles. The review highlights the importance of a person-centered approach and the crucial role of healthcare staff in promoting mental wellbeing among residents, especially those without family visits.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • The review found that frequent in-person family visits can significantly reduce depression among residents.
  • Carers should be mindful that family visits are just one part of a holistic approach to improving mental wellbeing. Encouraging socialisation, maintaining engagement with facility staff, and addressing individual resident needs are equally important in reducing depression and loneliness.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • By develop and support care models that are tailored to the individual needs, cultural values, and personal circumstances of aged care residents could effectively address depression.
  • Providing tailored care and increasing opportunities for social interactions among staff and co-residents can result in delivering holistic care to the older person.
