Long Summary

Effectively supporting older people of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to age well in their homes and communities in Australia relies on collaboration between families and community service providers to deliver culturally appropriate care. This project aims to generate knowledge that can inform practice and policy to facilitate such collaborations. Following Study 1 in 2023, which examined the experiences of receiving aged care from the perspective of older CALD people, Study 2 explored care experiences from the perspective of family carers who provide emotional, instrumental, social and other support for their older family members who are of CALD backgrounds. We want to use the knowledge obtained from our empirical research to engage different stakeholders involved in receiving and providing aged care, including relevant policymakers, in identifying policy and practice avenues to integrate community and family care to meet the care needs of older CALD people in Australia. We hope our research findings can contribute to building Australia’s capacity to provide accessible, sustainable, and culturally responsive support to enable older people of diverse cultural backgrounds to age well in their homes and communities and to prevent premature entry into residential care facilities, with long-term social and economic benefits for Australia.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Family carers play a crucial role in providing aged care for older CALD people, particularly for those late-life immigrants who moved to Australia to reunite with their adult children and/or their children’s families. The lack of awareness of in-home care services and over-reliance on family care lead to under-use of formal care services among older CALD people. Compounded by the lack of culturally responsive in-home care services, the under-use of needed aged care services can result in unmet needs of older CALD people and their family carers.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Recognise aged care as a relational and collective practice. Adopt a holistic approach in identifying the needs of both family carers and their older CALD family members. Enhance mental health support for family carers. Communicate effectively to family carers about support resources available to them. Enhance language support services for older CALD people in aged care processes. Facilitate collaboration between family carers and aged care services.
