Long Summary

This study explored how a community-based group singing intervention impacted the wellbeing of people with early-stage dementia and their family carers. The study found that involvement in group singing was linked to increased feelings of support, solidarity, and belonging, positively impacting both those with early-stage dementia and their family carers.

  • Revealed that loneliness may be overcome through community activities such as group singing
  • By engaging with group singing, carers were able to connect with a new community which allowed them to support each other and discuss similar challenges they had encountered in their caring role
  • Allowed carers to spend meaningful time with their care recipient

  • Revealed many positive outcomes arising from group singing with people who are going through similar life changes as participants reported an increased feeling of belonging
  • The singing intervention led to a decrease in feelings of loneliness and social isolation, which are common feelings experienced by carers
