Long Summary

This study explores a decision that rural carers often face: whether to move to a larger metropolitan centre to access support services or to remain living in a rural area. This study identifies a range of factors that may be considered when rural carers decide whether or not to relocate. It is hoped that through identifying these factors, the implementation of NDIS in rural areas can be improved so that more flexible and localised supports are offered in the future.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • A range of factors were considered by rural carers when deciding whether to relocate to a metropolitan area to access services: these included, caring responsibilities, their support networks, and the time and cost of accessing specialist services
  • Advocates for the NDIS to offer more person-centred, flexible, and localised support in rural areas

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • This study aims to improve the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in rural areas by illuminating the factors that influence rural carers' decisions to remain in place or relocate
  • Ideally, rural carers will eventually be able to make the decision to live in a rural area without experiencing a reduction in support services
