Long Summary

This paper explores the unique experiences of grandchildren as caregivers. Through a systematic review of 12 studies, it highlights the emotional and relational impacts of caregiving, including stress, changes in family dynamics, and personal growth. These young caregivers often feel a deep sense of responsibility and connection, shaped by the care their grandparents once provided them. They adapt to new roles and responsibilities, which can lead to personal growth and increased maturity. - Many grandchildren report personal growth, increased knowledge about dementia, and development of coping strategies.
The review emphasises the need for systemic support and tailored interventions to help grandchildren manage their caregiving roles effectively, considering the influence of other family relationships and the broader family system.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • While caring for a grandparent with dementia can be challenging and emotionally demanding, it also brings opportunities for personal growth and deeper family connections.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • By recognising the unique emotional and relational challenges faced by grandchildren caring for grandparents with dementia, policies should aim to provide comprehensive resources and support systems that address the broader family dynamics and promote positive caregiving experiences. This includes mental health support, educational programs, and respite care to alleviate stress and enhance the wellbeing of these young carers.
