Long Summary

Young carers have been identified as particularly disadvantaged with respect to education and employment however limited research exists concerning the impact of location differences. This article investigates the influence of location on young carers maintaining their education and employment. The results of the study suggest that more young carers live outside major cities and that these carers experience lack of neighbourhood services, infrastructure and information.

  • Identified the impacts of location on young carers such as decreased time spent on school work, employment and socialising as well as reduced access to transport
  • Suggests that location may impact young carers disproportionately to other young people

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Current policy approaches fail to view caregiving as a potential reason for young people's non
  • participation in education and employment
  • Policy makers need to identify why services and local infrastructure are not currently meeting young carers needs
  • Improvement of services and local infrastructure may assist young carers in balancing competing responsibilities such as education and employment
