Long Summary

This study focused on creating a tool to help identify caregivers of older adults in hospitals who might be at risk of depression. The research took place in a large hospital from 2015 to 2017 and involved family caregivers of patients aged 65 and older who had unplanned admissions and needed help with daily activities. The researchers looked at 11 different factors, including how much control caregivers felt they had, their level of burden, and their education. They found that 33.6% of the 274 caregivers studied were at risk of depression. - This study demonstrate that this new tool is easy to use and can quickly identify caregivers who might need extra support, making it a valuable addition to the admission process for older adults.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • By using the screening tool developed in this study, healthcare providers can offer caregivers the support they need right from the start. This means that during the hospitalization of care recipients, there will be a focus not just on the patient, but also on ensuring caregivers have the resources and assistance to manage their own health and quality of life.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • By integrating strategies such as this tool into the admission process for older adults, healthcare systems can provide targeted support to caregivers, potentially improving their mental health and quality of life.
  • This proactive approach can lead to better outcomes for patients and reduce the overall burden on healthcare services.
