Long Summary

Research has shown that children growing up in households with a person with a disability, long term illness, or frailty due to old age are more likely to take on caring responsibilities that are outside the scope of what most children would be expected to do within the home. However, it is difficult to get precise estimates around how many young people are undertaking caring roles. This chapter aims to shed light on how many children provide care, how much time they spend caring, the type of care they provide, the impact of a household’s socio-economic circumstances on caring and the impact of caring on a young person’s academic achievement.
