Long Summary

Despite growing awareness and prevalence of autism spectrum disorders, many children on the autism spectrum and their families still experience stigma and discrimination. This article investigates carers’ perceptions of stigmatisation when caring for a child with autism. Research found that there were four main experiences of stigma: lack of knowledge, judgement, rejection and lack of support, which occurred at school, in public and amongst family and friends.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Despite increasing knowledge of autism spectrum disorders, many families still experience stigma at school, in public and amongst family and friends
  • The experience of stigma is interconnected in these different contexts, so support should take this into consideration

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Families who experienced stigma in one context were more likely to experience stigma in other contexts
  • Many families experienced stigma in more than one context, ultimately impacting quality of life
  • Stigma was related to lack of knowledge, judgement, rejection and lack of support
