Are young carers less engaged in school than non-carers?

Evidence from a representative Australian study

Summary

This study explores the impact of caring on education engagement in secondary school. The study reveals that whilst school engagement of young carers of a family member with a disability did not differ significantly from that of non-carers, young carers of people with a mental illness or using alcohol/drugs had significantly lower school engagement. The findings of this study therefore support greater support for young carers in school, particularly those who are caring for someone with a mental illness or using alcohol/drugs.
