Long Summary

This article analyses the effectiveness of interventions that are generally available for carers in Australia. The article begins by providing an overview of available interventions, including information and education, psychoeducation, respite, counselling, peer support and social participation, and technology and multicomponent interventions. The authors then discuss the effectiveness of these interventions, emphasising the barriers that currently prevent access to carer interventions.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Acknowledges that carers will often neglect their own health and wellbeing and instead prioritise their care recipient's health and wellbeing
  • Acknowledges the physical, emotional, mental, financial, social, and psychological impacts that caring can have on carers
  • Emphasises that each carer requires different support and intervention
  • Acknowledges that many carers face barriers when trying to access existing interventions

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Emphasises the importance of developing individually tailored interventions for carers based on their individual situation and experiences
  • Emphasises the importance of long-term interventions, the inclusion of the care recipient and wider family network, and suitably timed interventions
