Long Summary

Austria has been classified as ‘preliminary’ in terms of policies for young carers. By mapping existing policy measures and contrasting them with young carers’ lived experiences, we have provided a more detailed account of the policy situation in Austria and the implications of caregiving for young people in a context where young carers are only slowly starting to receive more attention. In terms of empirical methods, we adopted a two-step approach: first, we mapped policies and support measures for young carers in Austria; and, second, we conducted 16 qualitative interviews with young carers, former young carers and professional experts.

    Key Messages for Carers

  • Policies for young carers should ideally do both: enable young people to provide care in the ways and to the extent that they can and want to do it; and, at the same time, create the conditions in which young people have the freedom to leave their caring roles behind.

  • Key Messages for Policy Makers

  • Individual support measures alone are insufficient to improve the situation of young carers and that this can only be achieved through specific regulation and the formalisation of young carers’ rights, as well as through systematic interventions across different fields of policy and practice.
